Job Description

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to work in the Biorefining Conversions and Fermentation Laboratory run by Dr. David Bressler at the University of Alberta. The postdoc will work together with an existing fermentation team to develop fermentation strategies to produce single cell protein (SCP) for animal feed applications. The production of SCP is an extremely promising approach to help address the growing demand for animal feed as the livestock and aquaculture industries strive to supply a growing global population.

The Bressler lab has established itself as a leading fermentation laboratory through numerous research efforts and publications involving various feedstocks and fermentation strategies. The Bressler lab is equipped with numerous bench-scale fermenters, twelve 5 L fermenters, four 10 L fermenters, freeze and spray dryers, and an extensive analytical suite that includes several HPLCs and GCs with various detectors, and an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).

The postdoc will work with the Bressler lab team to develop fermentation strategies that will facilitate high-density culture growth. The postdoc will also assist with downstream processing of the fermentation broth and will perform a wide range of analytical techniques. Finally, the postdoc will liaise with our industrial collaborator, who is working to scale-up and commercialize our fermentation technology.

Application Instructions

For this postdoc position, experience with fermentation and a strong background in microbiology or biochemical engineering are essential. The successful candidate needs to have basic laboratory skills, as well as a willingness and aptitude to learn additional skills and acquire proficiency with a wide variety of analytical equipment. Finally, the postdoc needs to have good communication skills and the ability to work as part of an integrated team.

Interested candidates should contact Dr. David Bressler (dbressle@ualberta.ca) with a cover letter and a copy of their most recent CV. We would like to fill this position as soon as possible.
